After learning about Garland Robinette’s series of “Juju Doll” paintings during a campus visit from the artist himself, first- and second-grade Art Club students at St. Pius X created their own Juju Dolls by personalizing them with emblems that bring them joy. Irish-born, clergy sexual abuse survivor Marie Collins, who quit a Vatican panel in 2017 when she believed it was not fulfilling its stated mission to establish ironclad, global guidelines to protect children from abuse, told a New Orleans audience Sept. 17 that laypersons will have to force the institutional church to make concrete changes in accountability and transparency.

Ascension of Our Lord Knights of Columbus Council #9623 recently awarded the Louisiana Knights of Columbus Triple Star Award at the New Orleans diocesan meeting Sept. 16. This was the only council in Louisiana to achieve this honor this year for new member recruiting. Grand Knight Mike Abbate was also awarded as top recruiter in the state for the 2018-2019 Columbian calendar year!

Priests of the Archdiocese of New Orleans will gather Sept. 24-26 for their annual convocation, with a program for priestly wellness offered by representatives of the Saint John Vianney Center of Downington, Pennsylvania.

The focus of this year’s 40 Days for Life New Orleans campaign (Sept. 25-Nov. 3) is to protect women and unborn children from abortion through inter-denominational prayer, peaceful vigil, and community activism.

In this age of “constant communication,” it seems like we have less and less of it on a quality level.  How many times have you had a texting “conversation” for 30 minutes that could have taken five minutes if you had spoken by phone?  When my children are making plans with their friends and texting back and forth, I will say, “How about if you just give him/her a call to be sure you are both clear about the plans?”

Pope Francis said the challenges facing humanity and the Earth are so urgent and important that he has invited world leaders, educators and young people to come to the Vatican next spring to launch a global alliance for building a new, more humane future.

Traditions die hard in a historic city like New Orleans and its metropolitan area. Regardless of the changes brought about by time, the folks here cling to things that have significant meaning in their lives.
