The recently transpired basketball season didn’t yield a division championship for girls’ basketball teams within the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
But the 2021-22 campaign produced a crop of talented athletes worthy of post-season accolades by the Clarion Herald on its annual Elite Girls’ Basketball Team.
The best of 10 honorees, earning Most Outstanding Player, is a sophomore from De La Salle, Danai Lewis, who was the key player in the Cavaliers sharing the District 11-3A title in a run that culminated with 19-12 record.
During that trek, Lewis, a 6-foot, 1-inch center, averaged 19.1 points, 11 rebounds and three assists per game. She also was credited with three blocked shots per game over the team’s 31-game season.
Lewis heads a mythical team that includes two honorees who were selected for the second year.
Archbishop Chapelle’s Baylie Carroll earned a spot as a freshman in 2020-21. At the halfway point of her high school career, the guard has scored more than 1,000 points in leading the Chipmunks to a 17-11 record in the highly competitive District 9-5A.
Also making a return appearance is St. Charles Catholic junior center Mya Brown, whose all-around play was a key part of the Comets accruing a 19-12 record.
Joining the trio are A’yiana Flemings of Ursuline Academy; Dominican’s Allison Tullier and Sophia Martin; Bailey Schexnaildre and Jessica Runnels of Mount Carmel; St. Scholastica’s Addison Pontiff; Maya Peterson of St. Mary’s Academy; and Lauren Smith of De La Salle.
Ryan Reuther, who guided Dominican to a share of the District 9-5A title, a 25-5 record and a No. 2 playoff seed, earned Coach of the Year recognition.
Between Dec. 8, 2021 and Jan. 6, 2022, Reuther’s team won 10 consecutive games, including tournament titles at Fontainebleau, Chapelle and Episcopal of Baton Rouge.
The season ended in the second round of the Division I playoffs with a 54-52 loss to St. Joseph’s Academy, the No. 7 seed.
