Abp. Aymond: 'St. Michael, defend us in battle'

To: Clergy, Religious and Laity in the Archdiocese of New Orleans

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

With sadness we have experienced two priests withdrawn from ministry because of their infidelity to the promises of priesthood. It is evident that the evil spirit can be at work in the lives of those in ministry.

Both the abuse of minors and the desecration of a sacred place are serious sins and cannot be tolerated. We must pray for the healing of all victims and all those who have been hurt by these actions. Please join me in a day of atonement, prayer and fasting on Friday, Oct. 23, 2020.

St. Peter reminds us: “The devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. Resist him, (remaining) solid in your faith” (1 Peter 5:8-9). This serves as a reminder to all of us that the evil spirit is eager to tempt us to toss away the commands of God and give in to the way of Satan.

Therefore, I am requesting that at all Sunday Masses (and Vigil), the prayer of St. Michael be prayed after the final blessing.

As we face the evils of our day, St. Michael the Archangel protects us in this battle. The Family Prayer is still relevant as we continue to experience the evils of violence, murder and racism. I suggest the Family Prayer can be prayed before Mass or to conclude the General Intercessions. (The time is at the discretion of the pastor.)

As we have felt the pain of recent events, please do not forget the many priests in our Archdiocese who faithfully lead and serve in the name of Christ. Please pray for them and thank them for their ministry in this challenging time.

Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.
