Archbishop Rummel High School sponsored an Academic Rally March 13 in which 96 elementary students from public, parochial and private schools in Orleans and Jefferson parishes competed in English, mathematics, science and social studies.
Denise Schmidt, director of community engagement for Rummel, said this was the third year Rummel has hosted the event, which began in 2018. The 2020 event was canceled due to COVID-19.
Schmidt said Rummel department heads and teachers in English, math, science and social studies formulated the questions for the competition. Trophies were awarded to the top three winners in each subject by Rummel head of school Marc Milano. In addition, the highest-scoring participants (first-, second- and third-place finishers) from each school were given medals
Josephine Balhoff of Christian Brothers School was the overall first-place winner, followed by Henry Lackey of Stuart Hall School in second place and Ben Farmer of Christian Brothers School in third.
Winners in each category were:
► English: Josephine Balhoff, first; Jonathan Brockhaff, second; and Ben Farmer, third, all Christian Brothers School students.
► Mathematics: Henry Lackey, first, Stuart Hall School; Ben Farmer, second, and Josephine Balhoff, third, Christian Brothers School.
► Science: Leah Gilmore, first, and Grace Chategnier, second, St. Clement of Rome; and Henry Lackey, third, Stuart Hall.
► Social Studies: James Holmes, first, and Grady Miles, second, Stuart Hall School; and Josephine Balhoff, third, Christian Brothers School.
