The Archdiocese of New Orleans will hold its annual “Day ON, Not OFF” service event on Jan. 15, 2024 – the Monday national holiday honoring the birthday and service legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Individuals, families and other groups of volunteers from area high schools, youth groups, church parishes, clergy, religious and laity are encouraged to take part in the day of service, which is being coordinated again this year by the offices of Black Catholic Ministries, Catholic Education and Faith Formation, CYO/Youth & Young Adult Ministry and Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans.
At 8 a.m. on Jan. 15, volunteers (ages seventh grade and up) are asked to gather at the archdiocese’s CYO headquarters, 2241 Mendez St, New Orleans, for a simple continental breakfast and opening prayer service led by Archbishop Emeritus Alfred Hughes. Volunteers are responsible for their own transportation to and from their assigned volunteer sites. A brown-bag lunch and T-shirt will be provided to all registered volunteers.
Service work at this year’s event will include assisting at community gardens and serving the homeless at a local shelter. A closing prayer and service reflection at the volunteer sites will conclude the service day at 3 p.m.
“Since the start of this Day of Service for the Archdiocese of New Orleans in 2007, we have witnessed thousands of Catholics – from different walks of life, races, ages and neighborhoods – living out their faith by taking time to improve the quality of life in our community through service,” said Dr. Ansel Augustine, director of the Office of Black Catholic Ministries. “What a wonderful way to be a witness of Christ!”
Volunteers are asked to register online by Jan. 5 at https://giving.parishsoft.com/App/Form/b28a515a-d1e9-465d-bb0a-2ee496b6285f. For more details, call the Office of Black Catholic Ministries at (504) 861-6207.
