ANNUAL MASS OF THANKSGIVING TO OUR LADY OF PROMPT SUCCOR, on her feast day celebrated by Archbishop Gregory Aymond, Jan. 8, 4 p.m. Our Lady of Prompt Succor Shrine, 2635 State St., New Orleans. This Mass has been celebrated since the Battle of New Orleans. Ursuline’s elementary and high school choruses will sing. Open to the public.
ST. JOSEPH ALTAR LECTURE, Jan. 14, noon-3 p.m., St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s gym, 7701 Walmsley Ave., New Orleans. Culinary historian and food journalist Sandra Scalise Juneau will discuss the history and religious symbolism of foods on St. Joseph Altars in New Orleans. Admission is free. Juneau, a 1958 Dominican graduate, will discuss the traditions introduced in Louisiana in the late 1800s by Sicilian immigration. She also will demonstrate the intricate technique of carving symbolic cuccidate (fig cake designs) for altar display. The lecture will include a film presentation of vintage St. Joseph Altars. ST. MARY’S DOMINICAN, Jill Cabes was named vice president of Dominican Catholic Identity at Dominican. She is 1987 graduate of St. Mary’s Dominican High School, holds a master of arts in theological studies from Notre Dame Seminary, and a bachelor of science in physical therapy from Louisiana State University. She has served in an advisory capacity for Dominican’s STREAM™ – Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math – initiative, and was on the school’s master planning committee. She is St. Dominic parishioner, and she has spoken to various groups on numerous topics related to Catholic life.
JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL, Dr. Warren R. Bourgeois III, class of 1974, named 2016 Jesuit Alumnus of the Year for his achievements and distinguished service, either to Jesuit or the community-at-large. He received the award Oct. 1 during Jesuit’s Homecoming Mass in the Chapel of the North American Martyrs. After earning two degrees from Tulane, including his medical degree, Bourgeois served as a major in the United States Air Force Medical Corps Reserves and served active duty for four years including deployment in support of Operation Desert Storm. His medical career has centered on orthopedic surgery. Bourgeois is on active staff at Ochsner Baptist Medical Center, East Jefferson General Hospital and Jefferson Ambulatory Surgery Center. He has cared for student-athletes at Jesuit and has been on eight medical missions to Central and South America, and served on the New Orleans Medical Mission Services Advisory Board. He has been married for 31 years and has two children.
