Giving up worry for Lent made this the hardest Lent ever

Here I was, two weeks into Lent thinking that my peace and trust in God was at a new high. I decided to read Gary Zimak’s book “Give Up Worry” for Lent.

If you have never heard of this book, grab a copy! It’s an amazing meditation book with Scripture and prayer. I was proud of myself for keeping up with my daily readings and occasionally throwing my hands in the air and saying, “It’s all yours Lord. Do what you must. I trust in you!” Then, the virus happened. My Lenten penance went from 0-60 in 2.5 seconds.

The chaos in the stores, the abundance of closures and the first time I ever had to home-school came into view. It was overwhelming. I’d lie if I said I was terrified at one point in time.

I remained and still remain calm in front of my child. I want to show him a strong woman, a strong mom. I find myself more and more saying “Jesus I trust in you!” As each day changes, I remind myself about what my part is. I can stay at home when necessary. I can stay strong. I can be a beacon of hope to my family. I can also continue to trust in God.

This virus is so fluid. Each day is more extreme and different than the one before. The churches are closed, but I see hope. Our priests give me hope, especially those who are celebrating Mass via live stream online. It’s such a blessing to see.

Remember to be kind to others. We are all going through this together. It’s a new way of life for the moment. We need to be strong for our children, our husbands, wives and family. As a child, I never saw my parents in fear during national crises, especially during hurricanes and 9/11 – although I’m sure they were panicking behind closed doors.

My parents being calm in front of my brother and me provided calmness to our family. This is how I strive to be at this time. Remember to turn to God. Remember to love him. Grab your hand sanitizer, your rosary, read a book and trust in the Lord.
