DR. MARIAN T. HORVAT, gives two talks Feb. 24 on the Catholic church-approved apparition of Our Lady of Good Success in Quito, Ecuador. The first, 10 a.m.: “Our Lady of Good Success: Prophecies, Warnings and Hope for Our Times,” followed by a light lunch, then, the second, “Prophecies Fulfilled, and Those to Come on the Chastisement and the Reign of Mary.” Horvat, who holds master’s and doctorate degrees in Medieval History from the University of Kansas, with a specialty in cultural history, has written books and conferences on Our Lady of Good Success. The body of visionary Spanish Sister Mariana Jesus de Torres, who first saw her in 1594, is incorrupt to this day, as are the bodies of several nuns from the convent. Loyola University New Orleans College of Law and Law Alumni Board has presented the law school’s prestigious St. Ives Award to Law Clinic director and professor emeritus Bill Quigley, JD ’77. The award recognizes Quigley’s distinguished career as a public interest and human rights lawyer, an academic and an author. His work has been devoted to social justice issues, including public housing, the right to a job and a living wage, voting rights and education reform. He served as director of the Law Clinic and the Gillis Long Poverty Law Center at Loyola for more than 30 years. Quigley has also litigated numerous cases with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc., the Advancement Project and the ACLU of Louisiana and has served as an advisor on human and civil rights to Human Rights Watch USA and Amnesty International USA. He has been an active lawyer with School of the Americas Watch and the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti. Quigley is the author of “Ending Poverty As We Know It: Guaranteeing A Right to A Job At a Living Wage” (2003) and “Storms Still Raging: Katrina, New Orleans and Social Justice” (2008).
