Seeing God’s hand in the ‘mundane’ parts of marriage

This past Sunday, my husband and I celebrated our one-year anniversary. We spent time with family and friends, cut into (and ate) the top tier of our wedding cake and gave glory to God for the amazing year we’ve had together as newlyweds.

In just one short year – that flew by much too quickly – a multitude of milestones happened. We saw snow together for the first time on our honeymoon in Colorado. We celebrated our first Easter and Thanksgiving as husband and wife. I started my career as a journalist at the Clarion Herald, and, oh, we became homeowners at 23 years old. To say we are blessed is an understatement.

But, as much as I cherish these milestones, I find myself even more thankful for the everyday joys of marriage. Those simple joys of being married far surpass, in my mind, the big milestones that often get all the attention.

I get to wake up next to the person I love most, eat meals with him, sit on the couch and talk, run errands and share life’s ordinary moments.

These little things, the quiet constants of being married, are the moments I treasure most. They remind me that marriage isn’t just about celebrating the highlights; it’s about living fully in the everyday.

If the Lord blesses you with marriage, life lived with your best friend and spouse can, and should feel to you as one of God’s greatest gifts.

Getting to know my husband in deeper ways – like the different routes we take to the same destination or the fact that I prefer less salt on my food – fills me with gratitude.

The intimacy of truly knowing and being known by someone is a reflection of God’s design for us.

The beauty of marriage has also deepened my understanding of God’s love. Just as I treasure the small, everyday moments with my husband, I believe God desires to meet us in the mundane. He doesn’t just show up for the big milestones; he’s there in the quiet, ordinary rhythms of our lives, walking with us and inviting us to know him more intimately.

Scripture reminds us that we, as the Church, are the bride of Christ. Just as we wait in joyful anticipation for our wedding day, we as Christians long for the ultimate union with our bridegroom, Christ.

On that final day, we’ll experience perfect unity with him– a promise that makes even the smallest glimpses of his love here on Earth so sweet.

As I reflect on our first year of marriage, I thank God for the milestones, but even more, for the sacred gift of daily life with my husband.

It’s in the everyday moments that I see God’s hand most clearly, reminding me to treasure both the gift of my marriage and the infinite love of my heavenly bridegroom.
