Sister of St. Joseph Anne Marie Meridier (formerly Sister Mary of Lourdes), who served for 67 years in religious life, died April 8 at Mount St. Mary Convent in Wichita, Kansas. She was 85.
A native of New Orleans, Sister Anne was the daughter of the late Wilfred Francis Meridier and Olga Emily Bertus. She was preceded in death by her brother, Father Wilfred Meridier, and her sister Joan Brierre. She is survived by her sister Joy Horton (Bill), her brother-in-law Robert Brierre and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
Sister Anne graduated from St. Joseph Academy in New Orleans and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on Sept. 8, 1957. She professed final vows on July 30, 1965.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in math from St. Mary’s Dominican College in 1962 and a master’s of education degree in biology from North Carolina State in 1972. She earned certification in educational administration at St. Louis University and certification in spirituality from Creighton University.
Sister Anne taught at St. Joseph Academy in New Orleans and Baton Rouge and also served as principal of St. Joseph Academy in New Orleans. She was a member of the congregation’s formation team from 1979-83. In 1983, she served as community life coordinator and administrator at St. Joseph Provincial House in New Orleans.
In 2002, she moved to Cincinnati, where she served as general councilor for the congregation. In 2009, she returned to Baton Rouge to serve as coordinator of sisters at the congregation’s Hundred Oaks Retirement Center, until her retirement in 2014.
In 2020, Sister Anne moved to Mount St. Mary Convent in Wichita, where she maintained a prayerful presence at the Villa and St. Joseph Hall Assisted Living. She recently moved to the skilled care unit at Mount St. Mary.
Her Funeral Mass was celebrated April 13 at Mount St. Mary Resurrection Chapel. She was buried in the Sisters of St. Joseph Cemetery.
