St. Bonaventure: ‘We are being called to our next chapter’

St. Bonaventure Parish in Avondale celebrated its final Mass June 30, with Father Francis Offia, pastor presiding.

The church that opened in 1965, hosted its farewell Mass with over 200 past and present parishioners in attendance – many who were raised in the parish.

“I was an altar server as a boy and still am (an usher). I received all of my sacraments here,” Clint Walker said. “I live in St. Charles (civil) Parish and drive here every Sunday. This parish means a lot to me.”

In his homily, Father Offia assured the congregation of his love for them and that just as they were shedding tears, he believed Jesus was, too.

“We are being called to our next chapter,” he said. “Christ is present and waiting for us at the new parish. The best way to show love is to cross over and love the new parish.”

For long-time parishioner Eddie Faucheaux, this was an emotional day.

“I have been a parishioner since 1970,” he said.  “I have done every role imaginable here, a true labor of love. When other parishioners say they are going to miss me, I tell them to come with us to the new parish.”

The new St. John Paul II Parish will be located in Waggaman, with parishioners worshiping at Our Lady of Angels Church. Father Vincent Phan will be the pastor.
