Two PJP seniors earn scholarships from Willwoods

The Willwoods Community, a local Catholic nonprofit, selected two graduating seniors to receive its third annual 2022 Rev. Thomas E. Chambers Scholastic Award.
Pope John Paul II seniors Aidan Combs and Breanna Sebring are this year’s recipients. They will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship and a plaque on May 7 at the annual Willwoods Community Gala.
The Rev. Thomas E. Chambers Scholastic Award was established in 2018 in honor of the late Holy Cross Father Tom Chambers, the former Willwoods president.
Father Chambers served as president of Willwoods from 2003-17 and as president of WLAE-TV and LAE Productions.
He was president of Our Lady of Holy Cross College (now the University of Holy Cross) from 1987-2003. He also was on the staff at the University of Notre Dame, where he earned his Ph.D. in education in 1976. He was the Magistral Chaplain of the Order of Malta.
Modeled Father Chambers
The award is given to seniors attending a Catholic high school in the Archdiocese of New Orleans – one male and one female each year – who excel in leadership and their Catholic faith, epitomizing the life of Father Chambers, an educator who stressed leadership, said WLAE-TV president Ron Yager. They are nominated by the school. The award is also based on financial need.
“When he passed away (in 2018), we wanted to do something that honored him,” Yager said. “He will forever be remembered for his extraordinary kindness, joyful personalty, zest for life and love for his faith, work and for all people.”
The 10 nominated students wrote a one-paragraph personal statement, sent a resume and were interviewed by a committee.
Combs and Sebring will apply their $1,000 scholarships to the colleges they plan to attend next fall. Combs will attend Ole Miss, majoring in business, while Sebring will attend LSU to study political science.
